After 94 years, Lamy goes to the Mitsubishi Pencil Company
Heidelberg — The Mitsubishi Pencil Company from Japan is taking over the writing instrument manufacturer Lamy. The Heidelberg-based family business is one of the leading design brands in its segment and has been relying on Stuttgart-based consultants Hennerkes for many years. Lamy was looking for a strong partner for the further development of the growth area in digital writing and the expansion of international sales. No information was provided on the sales price.
Founded in 1930 by C. Josef Lamy, the family business is one of the leading brands in the writing instrument sector. Lamy employs more than 340 people and has sales outlets in over 80 countries. The family business was run by the third generation. According to media reports, Heidelberg’s turnover fell significantly during the coronavirus crisis, from EUR 110 million in 2019 to a forecast of EUR 77 million for 2023.
The acquirer Mitsubishi Pencil is even older than Lamy; the company was founded 137 years ago and has over 2,700 employees. The company, which operates 22 sales offices and 11 production facilities internationally, is also family-run. The uni-ball ballpoint pens with waterproof pigment ink are also well-known in Germany.
